<p>Waves have moving <em>crests</em> (or <em>peaks</em>) and <em>troughs</em>. A crest is the highest point the medium rises to and a trough is the lowest point the medium sinks to.</p>
<p>Crests and troughs on a transverse wave are shown in the figure below.</p>
