About 2017 PhD Studentship for International Students at Bournemouth University, UK
Application is currently ongoing for the 2017 PhD Studentship for International Students at Bournemouth University, UK.
The aim of this project is to provide analysis and modelling tools which enable us to discern metastable dynamics in high cognitive areas. This is important for deciding among competing models, and would be a significant advance in theoretical neuroscience. For instance, the discovery of stable states in hippocampus (by the British scientist John O’Kefee) deserved to win the last Nobel Prize. This is a scientific goal with no immediate clinical application. Nevertheless, altered brain dynamics is well-known to underlie, for instance, hyperactivity disorders or schizophrenia. Therefore, understanding neuronal network dynamics is a prerequisite for the future design of pharmacological cocktails which have a modulatory effect on altered activity dynamics.

Value of Scholarship
A fully-funded studentship includes a maintenance grant of £14,000 per year to contribute towards living expenses during the course of your research, as well as a fee waiver for 36 months. Associated costs – such as for fieldwork and conference attendance – will also be met under the Studentship.
Eligibility Criteria
- Any doctoral candidate is free to apply for a BU Studentship. The key criteria are demonstrating your motivation to complete your PhD within three years and showing that you have outstanding qualities.
- As a minimum, applicant must meet the university’s minimum doctoral entry criteria – an Honours degree at Upper Second Class (2.1) and/or an appropriate Master’s degree. If English is not your first language, you will also need a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent). However, in many cases candidates will be expected to have a First Class (Hons) degree and/or a distinction at Master’s level.
