ATPP Nigeria: How Serving Teachers Can Apply in 2026

3 min read

Summary

ATPP gives serving Nigerian teachers a six-month route towards professional education training and TRCN registration. See the PGDE and PDE routes, fee and deadline.

The Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway, or ATPP, is a six-month route for serving teachers who need formal professional education training and a pathway towards registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

The official ATPP portal says Cohort 1 applications close on 25 September 2026. Because dates and application instructions can change, applicants should confirm the details on the official ATPP portal before paying or submitting anything.

Who the pathway is for

ATPP is aimed at people already teaching who do not yet have formal professional education training. The portal lists non-professional teachers with non-education degrees, HND, ND or OND holders, community instructors and volunteer educators among the intended groups.

Applicants still need to check the route that matches their qualification and teaching experience. The official page lists a minimum of 24 months of classroom teaching experience for both qualification pathways.

PGDE or PDE: which route fits?

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

The PGDE route is listed for holders of a non-education Bachelor’s degree or HND who have at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience. It carries 40 credit units and runs for six months.

Professional Diploma in Education (PDE)

The PDE route is listed for holders of an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or National Diploma (ND) who have at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience. It carries 37 credit units and also runs for six months.

These are not two names for the same certificate. Read the eligibility details carefully and choose the route that matches your highest qualification.

How the six months are arranged

The official ATPP description divides the programme into four months of hybrid study and two months of supervised practicum. Hybrid study means that learning combines scheduled contact sessions with online work through the ATPP learning platform.

The listed areas include foundations of education, educational psychology, curriculum and pedagogy, inclusive education and safeguarding, assessment, digital and blended learning, and subject methodology.

What happens after study?

The pathway describes a sequence of application, blended study, certification and TRCN registration. To graduate and be recommended for registration, participants must complete the required credit units, pass teaching practice, meet institutional assessment requirements, demonstrate professional conduct and sit the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination.

Successful completion is described as making the participant eligible for TRCN registration at the appropriate category. It is not a promise of automatic employment, promotion or a particular salary.

Fee and official contacts

The ATPP portal currently lists the programme fee as ₦200,000 per teacher. Before making payment, confirm the amount, payment instructions and any instalment rules on the official portal.

A short application checklist

  1. Confirm that you are currently teaching and meet the experience requirement.
  2. Choose PGDE or PDE based on your qualification.
  3. Read the current programme guide and eligibility information.
  4. Use only the official ATPP application route.
  5. Save your application details and payment evidence.
  6. Contact the official helpdesk if the portal or payment instructions are unclear.

The closing date shown on the portal is 25 September 2026. If you plan to apply, check the official page early and keep a copy of the instructions you followed.
