Nigerian tertiary students now have a chance to test their writing, research, and critical-thinking skills on one of the most important topics of our time: artificial intelligence. The Brain Builders Development Youth Initiative (BBYDI), in partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, has opened applications for its 2026 National Essay Competition on AI literacy and responsible technology use.
About BBYDI
BBYDI is a youth-led nonprofit focused on promoting AI literacy, digital rights, and responsible technology use across Nigeria and Africa. This competition is part of its broader effort to encourage young Nigerians to think critically about the future of technology.
Essay Theme
Participants are to write on the topic: "Artificial Intelligence for Public Good: Balancing Innovation, Human Welfare, and Responsible Governance."
Applicants are encouraged to focus on specific sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, or the creative industry.
Who Can Apply
- Currently enrolled in a recognised Nigerian tertiary institution including universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, colleges of technology, monotechnics, and schools of nursing
- Aged between 18 and 30
- Must hold a valid student ID
- Essays must be original and previously unpublished
- Applicants consent to BBYDI's right to publish or reference winning work with appropriate credit
Prize Structure
- 1st Place: ₦400,000
- 2nd Place: ₦300,000
All winning essays will be published and featured in BBYDI's advocacy materials and learning resources, giving winners national visibility.
AI Usage Policy
This is an important rule to note: you may use AI tools to support your research and thinking, but the core argument, voice, and analysis must be demonstrably your own. Fully AI-generated essays with minimal personal contribution will be disqualified.
Use AI as a study companion, not a ghostwriter. The judges will be looking for original insight and genuine engagement with the topic.
