Nigeria Partners with UK's Loughborough University to Transform Education System

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major partnership with Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, marking a significant step toward educational reform in the country. The partnership was formalized during a high-level meeting in Abuja on June 16, 2025, between Nigeria's Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Sulaibah Sa'id Ahmad, and representatives from Loughborough University.

1. STEM Education Enhancement

6. Almajiri Education Integration

The partnership will work on mainstream integration of Almajiri education, ensuring these students receive comprehensive education while preserving cultural values.

Research and Development Commitment

Professor Ahmad emphasized the ministry's commitment to education research, noting that substantial budget resources have been allocated. The government is focused on ensuring that "research impacts the country" through structured frameworks that directly benefit national development.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Minister expressed interest in reviving bilateral scholarship programs between Nigeria and the UK. However, she emphasized the importance of fully funded, sustainable scholarship models rather than token programs that may not provide adequate support for students.

According to Professor Sam Grogan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University, this partnership recognizes that global challenges like climate change and environmental crises require sustained international cooperation. Two committees on Transnational Education have been established to operationalize the partnership. These committees will explore six competitive university partnership models and recommend the most effective approaches for implementation.
