Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) Gets Licence to Upgrade to University

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the upgrade of the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto, to a University Education. NUC’s executive secretary, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, presented the Letter of Recognition to the State Governor, Rt Hon. Aminu Tambuwal at a brief ceremony on Monday in Abuja.

The establishment of Shehu Shagari University makes Sokoto the first northern state to own a university of education and the 4th in Nigeria, thereby bringing the number of State Universities to 58 and the 206th university in Nigeria.

According to the NUC, the university was approved after the state governor presented the necessary documents including the Law Establishing the University of Education as passed by the State House of Assembly and Academic Brief among others.

In his response, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal said the establishment of the University was to bridge the gap in the provision of quality teachers and manpower needs in the state and indeed the country.
