Summary

UNIZIK arrests staff member who allegedly demanded N400,000 to secure admission. Acting VC reaffirms that admission is free and processed only through JAMB.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has taken decisive action against admission racketeering, with the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, ordering the arrest of a staff member accused of defrauding a prospective student's family.

The Incident

Mr. Nnaji Nnamdi Kenneth, an employee in the Personnel Unit of the Registry Department, allegedly demanded N400,000 from a prospective student's mother under the pretense of securing admission into the medical school. After receiving payment, Kenneth reportedly became unresponsive to the victim's calls and messages.

When confronted, the arrangement was allegedly renegotiated to instead secure admission into the Nursing Science program. The student's mother eventually reported the incident to university authorities after continued delays and excuses.

University's Response

Upon being confronted by university leadership, including the Chief Safety Officer and Chief Legal Officer, Kenneth admitted to his actions. The matter has been referred to the appropriate disciplinary committee for further proceedings.

Official Position on Admissions

The Acting Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university's policy that "admission is free" and is processed strictly through official JAMB channels. This enforcement action signals a zero-tolerance stance toward corruption in enrollment processes.

Warning to Prospective Students and Parents

This incident serves as an important reminder:

  • Legitimate admissions are processed only through JAMB CAPS
  • No payment is required to secure admission beyond official fees
  • Report any suspicious requests for money to university authorities
  • Verify all admission-related information through official channels
