The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) ‘witchcraft’ conference was organized yesterday, November 26th against all odds. It was reported that the conference recorded about 5,000 people in attendance, meanwhile, there was a change in the venue due to the large turnout. 

The conference kicked off with a hymn rendered by the Christ Church Choir of the institution. Although the theme of the conference remained the same but the word ‘witchcraft’ was omitted from the banner in other to prevent further controversy.

The conference continues today.

Following the public outrage and backlash, the proposed conference on witchcraft at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) had caused, the institution has bowed to pressure from various Christian groups to get the event canceled. This comes after several explanations from a literary and social critic, Prof Ijioma who said the conference wasn’t about promoting witchcraft, but Nigerian Christians still continued to condemn and pray against the conference.

 

In order to avoid a scene and appease religious groups, the organizers have decided to change the theme of the conference. The new theme doesn’t include witchcraft, although witchcraft will still be discoursed at the conference.

Members of the Christian community in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in collaboration with Graduate Students Fellowship has decided to organize a prayer conference on the same day slated for the witchcraft conference which is to hold on 26th and 27th November 2019.

This was fixed after lots of controversies ever since the ‘witchcraft conference’ was made public. Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), had earlier kicked against the conference saying it has evil motives. However, the organizers have explained that the conference is solely for academic purposes.

The University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Enugu State, will host a conference on witchcraft between November 26 and November 27. With the theme; “Witchcraft: Meaning, factors and practices”, and is to be convened by Professor B.I.C Ijomah, Centre for Policy and Research in UNN.

The event also listed David Ker, a former vice-chancellor of Benue State University, as the keynote speaker, Charles Igwe, UNN vice-chancellor, as the chief host, while Egodi Uchendu, director, B.I.C Ijomah centre for policy and research, is the host.

The Merriam Webster Dictionary described witchcraft as the use of sorcery or magic.
