The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially lifted its decade-long suspension of the Students' Union Government (SUG), restoring formal student leadership on campus for the first time in approximately 10 years.

What Happened

The SUG ban, which had been in place since around 2016 following crises linked to student protests, union-related conflicts, and administrative concerns, has been formally ended by the university management.

New SUG Executive Team

  • President: Bolaji Akinpelu
  • Vice-President: Apalomo Sunday
  • General Secretary: Solomon Daniel
  • ICE President: Oreoluwa Abraham

Multiple hall chairpersons across various student residences were also inaugurated alongside the main executive.

What This Means for Students

The reinstatement means UNILAG students now have formal elected representation for the first time in a decade. The university management has described the move as a renewed commitment to inclusive governance and constructive student engagement.

The newly inaugurated president has promised leadership focused on advocacy, welfare, and unity, while avoiding disruptions to academic activities. University authorities have urged the new executives to maintain discipline, transparency, and accountability.

UNILAG students can now engage with their SUG representatives on campus welfare, academic concerns, and student affairs.
