UNILAG Postpones Exams Over Bedbug Saga

Following the incessant trouble bedeviling the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the institution has decided to  postponed its forthcoming examinations slated for October 12 to 19.

It would be recalled that Hundreds of students of the University of Lagos yesterday staged a protest against bed bug, which they said invaded their campus hostels.

The protest started from Marire Hall to New Hall comprising Sodeinde Hall, Eni Njoku, Makama Bida Hall, Madam Tinubu Hall, Fagunwa Hall.

Deputy Registrar (Information) Mr Olagoke Oke who promulgated this to news men said that the institution would change the bed bug infested mattresses and furniture, which led to the protest and fumigate the hostels.

He said: “We cannot fumigate when students are on campus so we would wait for them to go on break before that. But plans are at an advanced stage to procure new mattresses for all the hostels. It is not just one mattress we are buying, but many, so it would take some processes and negotiations. The university is giving the students a one-week postponement of their examinations also.”

Students Union President Abiodun Martins urged management to go beyond yearly fumigation after procuring the mattresses.

Clerk of parliament, Adeonipekun Adeyanju said: “Management has agreed to buy new mattresses and change the bunks in the hostels and also buy a covering for the mattresses to prevent them from easy harm and dirt. However, I would advise them to fumigate every week once they start. Those things can hide anywhere and they have already laid eggs in hidden corners. So they can fumigate every week for a period of one month or even more to be sure they are all gone.”

A tour yesterday showed that the halls of residence are in good shape.

UNILAG to be Suspended by NUC over bedbug plague

The Nigerian University Commission (NUC) in an emergency meeting held in the early hours of Monday decided to suspend the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The decision to suspend the university was based on health reasons, chief among which is the Bedbug epidemic. This decision was reached after series of reports and complaints emanating from the school.

The university authority in its defense stated that a number of fumigation exercises have been carried out to put an end to what has now come to be known among the students as the ‘Bedbug Plague’. A top official of the prestigious institution who pleaded anonymity told our correspondence that, “the fumigation exercise is usually carried out during the holidays when students have vacated the residence”.

In contrary, the students who were seen protesting today as early as 7am with tattered looking beds claim that rather than exterminate the vile crawling creatures, the fumigation process (which was not properly done) seem to have empowered the bugs, as they are now seen breeding and crawling in large numbers.

“We sometimes wonder who owns the room, we or the bedbugs?” a protesting student in boxers and Arsenal jersey said.

“Welcome to UniBUG!” Another one shouted.

It is no longer news that students in various halls of residence embark on personal room fumigation from time to time, in a bid to get rid of the vile pests.

Even our correspondent who visited a number of rooms in some halls of residence in the school had to conduct most of the interview on her on her feet for fear of getting infected by the bugs.

Nowhere seems to be safe as the bugs are found in rooms, common rooms, and even classes.

It has been observed that the bedbugs are even more dreaded than the strictest lecturers. This is as a result of the social stigma that befalls anyone on whose body or clothes bedbug is caught in public.
