University of Canterbury F A Hayek Scholarship Details and FAQs
The University of Canterbury is New Zealand’s second oldest university. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Its original campus was in the Christchurch Central City, but in 1961 when it became an independent university it also began moving out of its original neo-gothic buildings, which were re-purposed as the Christchurch Arts Centre. The move was completed on 1 May 1975 and the university now operates its main campus in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam and offers degrees in Arts, Commerce, Education (physical education), Engineering, Fine Arts, Forestry, Health Sciences, Law, Music, Social Work, Speech and Language Pathology, Science, Sports Coaching and Teaching.
Each year, a student is offered the F A Hayek scholarship towards an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics or Political Science at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. The general conditions for the scholarship are as for the University of Canterbury Master’s Scholarship. The Scholarship is open for domestic and international students. The scholarship was established in 1994 by a gift from Alan Gibbs.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?
The scholarship is tenable by students enrolled in a programme for a master’s or an honours degree in Economics or Political Science at the University with a course weighting in the range 0.75-1.50 EFTS. Such a programme must include a research component of at least 30 points.The scholarship is tenable in either part one or part two of a two-year master’s degree programme. It is also tenable for 180-point, one-year master’s degrees offered by the Department of Political Science or the Department of Economics and Finance.

The scholarship recipient will receive $16,500.
