AKSU Receives NUC Approval to Establish Faculty of Law
Akwa Ibom State University has received approval from the National Universities Commission to establish a Faculty of Law, bringing the institution's total number of faculties to eleven.
Program Structure
The new Faculty of Law will offer a full-time Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) program at the Main Campus, commencing in the 2025/2026 academic session. The faculty comprises three departments:
- Private and Property Law
- Jurisprudence and International Law
- Commercial and Industrial Law
Approval Process
The NUC conducted a thorough assessment of AKSU's readiness, evaluating staffing levels, infrastructure quality, and essential academic resources. In an official letter dated November 10, 2025, addressed to Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor OtoAbasi E. Akpan, the commission confirmed authorization for the program to commence.
Institutional Growth
This approval comes during a period of significant expansion under Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Akpan's leadership. Within three months, the university has achieved:
- Establishment of two additional faculties
- Accreditation of over 30 postgraduate and undergraduate programs
- Approval of more than 30 research institutes and centers
