House of Reps Calls for Improved Funding for NYSC

The House of Representatives is set to discuss a bill that aims to provide sustainable funding for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The bill, titled “The NYSC Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill 2024,” was introduced by a lawmaker from Nasarawa State.

The bill’s main objective is to create a legal framework for managing and funding the NYSC’s skills acquisition, training, and empowerment programs for corps members. It proposes establishing a trust fund that would receive 0.2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund, as well as other sources of funding, such as grants, donations, and investments.

The trust fund would be used for:

• Financing skills acquisition training and empowerment of corps members
• Meeting the training and retraining needs of NYSC personnel
• Enhancing the skills of corps members for improved proficiency and employment generation
• Improving the performance and efficiency of the NYSC in carrying out its responsibilities

The bill also outlines the establishment of a Board of Trustees to oversee the administration, application, and disbursement of the trust fund’s resources. The board would consist of representatives from the NYSC, government ministries, and the private sector.
