Across Africa there are many talented and academically gifted girl students who are unable to complete their schooling due to a variety of social, economic and/or cultural reasons. Key among these is a lack of financial support. In her lifetime Margaret Sanders was a keen supporter of girls’ education. AISA is proud to offer the Margaret Sanders AISA Scholarship for Girls. This annual Scholarship may be offered to more than one student per year, funds permitting.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the scholarship?:

• Each Full Member AISA school is invited to identify and process applications from female students who are first country nationals residing in countries where the school is located.
• There is no age restriction for this scholarship but candidates will normally be secondary school students (Grade 9-12). Support for students commencing earlier than grade 9 will be considered under exceptional circumstances.
• All applications must be received from a Full Member School. Individual students cannot apply to AISA directly for this scholarship.

What are the benefits of the award?

• Participating schools commit to covering core tuition costs associated with the student’s education, year on year until graduation. The Margaret Sanders AISA Scholarship supports the school contribution by covering a full range of incidental expenses such as extracurricular activities, school camps and IT expenses.
• Award maximum: US$2,000 per annum per student

How to Apply for the Margaret Sanders AISA Scholarship

• Each participating school is welcome to design and implement a scholarship application process appropriate to their context.
• Once the school has selected their scholarship nominee, they are invited to submit the candidate to AISA for consideration of the Margaret Sanders AISA Scholarship for Girls.
• Only one nomination can be made per full member school per year.
• Applications must be received by AISA no later than March 1st prior to the school year during which the scholarship will commence. The completed submission from the participating school to AISA must clearly indicate:
• Full details of the candidate girl’s application to the school along with any support documents that may be pertinent.
• A written assurance from the head of the school indicating the school’s willingness to commit to supporting the candidate’s education until graduation (contingent of the scholarship holder meeting all of the participating school’s graduation requirements).
• The number of years the school expects support from the Margaret Sanders AISA Scholarship for the candidate.
• The annual amount the school will contribute (in cash or kind) towards the candidate’s education (optional).
• Completed applications will be submitted to the AISA Board for their consideration.
• Scholarships will be paid directly to the school of the winning candidate. The school is required to invoice AISA within three months of the scholarship being awarded.
• Annual progress reports (including a financial report on how the money was spent) must be submitted to AISA at the end of each academic year in order to secure ongoing support for the scholarship.

Margaret Sanders International Scholarship Details and FAQs

The annual Margaret Sanders International Scholarship is open to graduating high school students from AISA full member schools. The scholarship provides financial support for the graduate to attend college or university (must be a 501 (c)(3), U.S. chartered, degree-granting institution) and may cover a broad range of educational expenses such as tuition, room and board, books, computers and the like.

• Be enrolled at an AISA Full Member school in good standing
• Be in their senior year of high school
• Be endorsed and recommended by their school
• Have applied to a qualifying 501 (c)(3), U.S. chartered, degree-granting institution

What are the selection criteria?

The scholarships will be awarded to the students who demonstrate character strengths such as persistence and motivation, resourcefulness, and acceptance of other cultures and points of view.

Nominated students should also display a genuine interest in, and sustained commitment to the welfare of others, as reflected through participation in school activities, and community/civic involvement.

Factors considered in the selection process include:

• Full Member AISA schools are invited to submit one student

for consideration of the scholarship opportunity.

• Scholarship details and the application form can be found on the AAIE website here.
• AAIE will forward all applications received from the region to the AISA Board who will choose one student to represent the AISA region. This applicant will then compete with candidates in other regions for this prestigious international award.
• Applications are due with AAIE on 15 November.
• Winners will be notified on 15 December with awards presented at the annual AAIE Conference in February.
