The University of Osaka accepts Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. For 2027 entry, international applicants should pay close attention to the embassy recommendation route, the university's Admissions Assistance Desk process and the Letter of Acceptance deadline.

Scholarship Routes

There are two main application routes for MEXT scholarship students at the University of Osaka:

  • Embassy Recommendation: Applicants are recruited and first screened by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in their country.
  • University Recommendation: Applicants must first pass an eligible University of Osaka programme process and be selected as MEXT scholarship candidates.

Undergraduate Applicants

For the embassy recommendation route, undergraduate scholarship recipients usually complete one year of Japanese language lessons at the Center for Japanese Language and Culture before entering an undergraduate programme if they pass the entrance examination.

Graduate Applicants

Graduate scholarship recipients usually begin as research students for six to twelve months. After passing the entrance examination, they may proceed to a master's or doctoral programme.
