Latest: JAMB Orders ABU to Change Candidate’s Course From Anatomy To Medicine

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has ordered Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) to offer medicine to a female aspirant of the institution. The female aspirant, Thomas Goodness Shekwobyalo from Niger state was said to have been offered Anatomy instead of the Medicine she applied for by ABU.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede gave this directive in Bwari, Abuja at a review meeting with the representative of the Commissioner for Education in Niger State, Bellu Attahiru, the Admission Officer of ABU, Haruna Ali Mohammed, representatives of the Civil Society Organisations and top officials of the agency.

The girl and the parents who were absent from the meeting despite being invited alleged that she was denied admission to study medicine even after scoring 302 in 2019 UTME because she is a Christian.

However, while reviewing the case of the girl during the meeting, it was discovered that ABU decided to peg its Merit List at two candidates per state leaving out Shekwobyalo from those shortlisted for medicine.

The JAMB Registrar, Oloyede said despite the fact that it has been proven that Shekwobyalo was not discriminated against on religious or ethnic basis; it was wrong for ABU to limit its Merit List to two per state.

Based on this, the JAMB Registrar stated that the board has decided to reverse her Anatomy admission and directed ABU to put her on notice that she has been offered to read Medicine. However, it is left for her to accept or reject.

Remember the story of miss Goodness Thomas, an indigene of Niger state that was denied admission in ABU Zaria to study medicine and surgery mainly due to catchment area? She was the best graduating student of St. Clement’s Secondary School, Gbaiko Minna for year 2019, and had scored six A1s in her Senior School Certificate Examination, 302 and 278 in JAMB and Post UTME respectively.

Well all is now in order as the Governor of Benue state, Samuel Otom has directed that miss Goodness Thomas be placed on a scholarship and given admission into Benue state University to study her preferred course.

The governor said young people should be encouraged to excel in their chosen careers, irrespective of religion, tribe and place of origin. Congrats to Miss Goodness.

Earlier: ABU Denies Girl who Scored 302 in JAMB and 274 in Post UTME Admission

The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria led by Prof Ibrahim Garba the current Vice Chancellor of the institution has been strongly criticized for the school admission policy which saw a qualified candidate get denied admission. The major reason for the denial has been cited as, catchment area quota.

The student identified as Goodness Thomas, a Valedictorian of St. Clement Secondary School, Gbaiko Minna, Niger State, scored 302 in her JAMB and 274 in Post UTME where ABU Zaria was chosen as her preferred option. She has 6 A1s (including Maths, Biology, Physics and Chemistry) in her WAEC, and was denied admission to study her course of choice, Medicine and Surgery. She was rather offered admission in the department Human Anatomy.

It is worthy to note that, ABU Zaria cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery is 250, while miss Goodness scored 302, surpassing that score by 52 points.
